PMI-RMP® Eligibility

The PMI Risk Management Professional (PMI-RMP)® is a prestigious certification offered by the Project Management Institute (PMI) that validates a professional's expertise in risk management. The PMI-RMP certification recognizes an individual's unique expertise on the project team while demonstrating the recognition and value the role provides to the project management profession. In this role, an individual has more competence in the specialized area of assessing and identifying project risks while mitigating threats and capitalizing on opportunities than a general practitioner and yet, also maintains a basic level of competence in all areas of project management.

Who Should Apply?

The PMI-RMP certification is designed for individuals who specialize in or aspire to specialize in the field of risk management within the context of project management. The PMI-RMP is evidence of your real-world, hands-on experience and skill as part of risk management in your projects.

Educational Background Project Risk Management Experience Project Risk Management Education
Secondary diploma (high School diploma, associate’s degree or global equivalent) At least 36 months spent in the specialized area of professional project risk management within the last five consecutive years 40 contact hours of formal education in the specialized area of project risk management
OR
Four-year degree (bachelor’s degree or global equivalent) At least 24 months spent in the specialized area of professional project risk management within the last five consecutive years 30 contact hours of formal education in the specialized area of project risk management
OR
Bachelor’s or post-graduate degree from a GAC accredited program (bachelor’s or master’s degree or global equivalent) At least 12 months spent in the specialized area of professional project risk management within the last five consecutive years 30 contact hours of formal education in the specialized area of project risk management

NOTE: If you are a graduate of a GAC accredited degree program you will receive a 12-month credit towards the work experience requirement. Also, you can use the GAC course work to fulfill the 35 education contact hour requirement.

Candidates must also have completed a minimum of 30 contact hours of training in risk management, which can be earned through formal education or risk management training courses.

Once candidates meet the eligibility criteria, they can apply for the PMI-RMP exam through the PMI website. Upon approval of their application, they can schedule and take the PMI-RMP exam at a designated test center. The exam assesses candidates' knowledge of risk management principles, best practices, tools, and techniques and evaluates their ability to apply risk management in real-world scenarios.

Gain and Maintain Your PMI-RMP The certification exam has 115 multiple-choice questions and you have two and half hours to complete it.

To maintain your PMI-RMP, you must earn 30 professional development units (PDUs) in risk management topics every three years.
