PfMP® Eligibility Criteria

The Portfolio Management Professional (PfMP)® certification, offered by the Project Management Institute (PMI), is a gold standard project management certification for experienced portfolio managers seeking to demonstrate their expertise in managing multiple related projects and aligning them with organizational strategy. Eligibility Criteria for PfMP® Exam:

To be eligible for the PfMP certification, you must meet certain educational and professional experience requirements. All project, program, and portfolio management experience must have been accrued over the last 15 consecutive years. The eligibility criteria are as follows:

PfMP Certification Process Overview

The evaluation process consists of two key stages to assess your portfolio management expertise:

Evaluation 1 — Panel Review
In the first stage, a panel of experienced portfolio managers will carefully review your application. They will evaluate your professional experience based on your responses to the Portfolio Management Experience Summaries provided in your application. This review helps determine whether your background aligns with the required standards of portfolio management.

Evaluation 2 — Multiple-Choice Examination
If you pass the panel review, you will proceed to the next stage, a multiple-choice examination. This exam is designed to test your knowledge and decision-making skills through situational and scenario-based questions. You will need to demonstrate your ability to apply portfolio management principles in real-world scenarios, ensuring you have both the theoretical understanding and practical expertise required for the role.

PfMP Application Process

If you believe that you meet the eligibility criteria, you must submit a detailed application on the PMI website, documenting your professional background, experience related to past projects and training. Below are some examples to help you document your experience.

Projects & Programs — Document the projects and programs you have led by specifying the organizations you worked with, your role and responsibilities, and the duration of each project.

Training & Certifications — Include details of the training programs you have completed, specifying the institutions attended, courses completed, and the total qualifying hours.

Experience Summaries — Write detailed descriptions of your professional experience in portfolio management, highlighting key contributions and achievements. Use these guidelines to ensure a structured and comprehensive documentation process.

PfMP Application Audit Process

By submitting your application, you agree to comply with the audit process. While all applications are subject to audit, only a random selection is audited. If your application selected, you will be notified before the Certification fee is paid, with instructions on how to comply. During the audit, you may be asked to provide supporting documentation, such as your diploma and supervisor signatures for relevant projects or programs. You have 90 days to submit the required documentation. Once received, PMI will review the materials, and you can submit your audit package via your pmi.org dashboard.

PfMP Exam Payment

After the application is approved (or for those not selected for an audit), candidates must pay the exam fee to schedule their PfMP® exam at a designated test center. The PfMP® exam assesses candidates' ability to manage and align multiple projects to achieve strategic organizational objectives. Successfully passing the exam demonstrates a candidate's proficiency in program management practices, emphasizing their strategic thinking, leadership, and ability to drive business results through successful program execution.
